Violet T. Cherrington age 92 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 5, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born November 15, 1924 in Alpena, Michigan daughter of the late William and Virginia (Brown) Traylor.
Violet was a longtime resident of Sturgis and lived in Rome City, Indiana for 24 years returning to Sturgis in 1989. While living in Rome City she was a member of the Rome City United Methodist Church.
On November 23, 1966 she married Gordon L. Cherrington in Rome City, Indiana. He died October 16, 2015.
She was a homemaker and for many years was employed as an Aide at the Sturgis Hospital.
Violet was a founding member of the Sturgis Wesleyan Church and a current active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Michiana Christian Women's Club all in Sturgis and enjoyed volunteer work.
She had a true talent for singing and was a longtime member of the Sweet Adeline's and could always be found singing in her church choirs. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Leader and enjoyed traveling. Violet had interests and hobbies but what always made her happiest was times surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her children: Judy Tobias of The Woodlands, Texas; Jody (Roger) Ford of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Amy (Estaban) Vasquez of Sturgis; Donald (Martha) Cherrington of Sturgis and Diana (James) Miller of Waterloo, Indiana; two daughters-in-law: Jodie Fuller of Sturgis and Jane Armstrong of Ann Arbor; 21 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren, expecting her fourth great great grandchild in August and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons: Jerry Fuller and Dirk Doorn; daughter-in-law: Shirley Fuller; son-in-law: Archie Tobias; two grandsons: Joshua Taylor and Henk Doorn; three infant great grandchildren and three sisters and two brothers.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Violet Cherrington will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1320 S. Lakeview Ave. in Sturgis. The Rev. Michael Wicks will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
