Richard Earle Kane age 82 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away early Sunday morning, December 4, 2016 at his home.
He was born June 27, 1934 in Amherst, Ohio son of the late Raymond W. and Mary Edith (Hile) Kane.
Dick resided in Sturgis since 1958 coming from Birmingham, Ohio. He had a love for Arizona and truly enjoyed the 13 years he and Shirley wintered there.
On September 3, 1955 he married Shirley Ann Call in Birmingham, Ohio.
Dick retired from Grumman Olson in Sturgis following 15 years of dedicated employment. He had also been employed as a firefighter and police officer for the City of Sturgis and a deputy for the St. Joseph County Sherriff Department and managed two travel plazas on the Indiana Toll Road.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis, Eagles Lodge #1314 and held life memberships in Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the LaGrange American Legion Post #215 and was a past member and Commander of Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion in Sturgis.
Dick was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1952-1960. He enjoyed flying and attending the Reno Air Races in Reno, Nevada, fishing and loved time spent with his family.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 61 years: Shirley; one daughter: Debra Kane of Sturgis; one son: Bruce (Karen) Kane of Shipshewana, Indiana; three grandchildren: Amanda Horning, Whitney Kane and Lauren Kane; three great grandchildren: Emily Horning, Ember Vandenburg and Minna Klinger.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister: Judy Steele.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Richard E. Kane will begin at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jeanne Koughn of the First United Methodist Church of Sturgis and the Rev. Matt Jones of the Covenant Church of Burr Oak will officiate. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. In accordance with his wishes cremation will follow the services. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis at a later date.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial donations be directed to Hospice of Sturgis, P.O. Box 126, Sturgis, MI 49091.
