Phyllis Catherine (Tschumy) Brown age 93 of Klinger Lake, Sturgis, Michigan passed from this world early Wednesday morning November 23, 2016 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born at Memorial Hospital in Fremont, Ohio on June 26, 1923, the oldest of two children born to Herbert Paul and Catherine (Stull) Tschumy.
Phyllis was a 1941 graduate of Ross High School in Fremont. After receiving her associate of art Degree in 1943 from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri she worked as a secretary at the Harris Trust and Savings Bank in Chicago, Illinois.
She was married on April 19, 1944 in Fremont to her high school sweetheart and love of her life William H. Brown. It was there that they reared their children. Bill worked as a manager for Crescent Manufacturing Company. Phyllis was active in the Fremont Cosmopolitan Club, St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a charter member of the Fremont Garden Club.
She and Bill loved to travel doing so extensively throughout Europe and North America even driving to the Arctic Circle. When not doing that the family often vacationed at the Brown family cabin on Klinger Lake, something the Browns had been doing since Bill's childhood days. Phyllis always loved the lake, especially since it was where Bill accompanied by his parents had taken her on their first date.
In 1984 she and Bill retired to Klinger Lake where she was active with the Magazine Guild at the Sturgis Hospital and the ministry at St. John's Episcopal Church.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents Herbert and Catherine Tschumy and her brother John H. Tschumy.
Phyllis is survived by her children, William Scott Brown of Fremont, Ohio and Kimberly (David) Busch of Sturgis, Michigan. She is also survived by four grandchildren: William Christian Cole Brown of Fremont, Ohio, Shannon (Paul) Tancona of Kansas City Missouri, Corbin Pulliam of Atlanta, Georgia and Molly (Chad) Rutledge of Anchorage, Alaska and six great grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Phyllis T. Brown will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, Dec. 9th at the St. John's Episcopal Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Aaron Evans will officiate. Burial of the ashes will follow the service at the St. John's Memorial Gardens.
The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331 is entrusted with the arrangements.
The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Brown's memory consider the St. John's Episcopal Church, 110 S. Clay St., Sturgis, MI 49091 or the charity of one's choice.
