Norma Jean Auten Snyder age 93 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Wednesday evening December 21, 2016 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born March 28, 1923 in Garrett, Indiana daughter of the late Clair E. and Dora (Wilson) Snyder.
Norma was a longtime Sturgis resident.
She was first married to Captain Kynard R. Auten of the 11th Airborne and later Marvin L. Snyder. Both husbands preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Leila Post School of Nursing in Battle Creek where she received her certification as a L.P.N. She worked in that capacity in the Civil Service at Fort Custer and had also been employed as a LPN for the Sturgis Hospital in the operating room and the Coldwater Hospital in the O.B. Department. For many years she was involved in the clothing retail business. Along with her son Kynard she owned and operated the Doris Shop in Bronson, the Orange Box in Sturgis, Coat of Arms in Albion and Kelly's in Three Rivers, retiring in 1980.
Norma was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis where for many years volunteered as a teacher's aide with the Trinity Lutheran School Pre-School class. She was also a member of the National Association of Licensed Practical Nurses, Sturgis Hospital Gift Shop Guild and the Homemaker Extension Group.
Norma wanted to extend a special blessing to all the people that touched her life.
She is survived by one daughter: Pamela Lee Schafer; one grandson: Scott Schafer; three granddaughters: Kelly Simmons, Kathy Raymond and Lesley Schafer; 2 great grandchildren: Elizabeth Simmons and Kyle Raymond and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands; one son: Kynard Roy Auten, Jr.; three sisters and four brothers and special longtime dear friend: Robert Long.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service honoring and celebrating the life of Norma Jean Snyder will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Calvin Kolzow will officiate. Private placement of the ashes will take place at Sturgis Memorial Gardens following the service.
