Neil H. Johnston age 84 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away late Saturday morning June 10, 2017 at his home.
He was born May 4, 1933 in Grand Rapids, Michigan son of the late Paul R. and Mary Elizabeth (Simons) Johnston.
Neil resided in Sturgis since the early 1960s coming from Grand Rapids.
On July 3, 1967 he married Gladys Kanouse in Sturgis.
Neil owned and operated Johnston's Landscape Management in Sturgis for many years. He also owned and operated with his wife the Blue Plaza Skating Rink, later renamed Johnston's Skate-O-Rama for 40 years.
He was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis where he served as the church organist and choir director for many years. He was an active member of the Sturgis Kiwanis Club where he held each office including Past President. He furthered his service with the Kiwanis Club on the State level serving as Lieutenant Governor for District 12 two different times. He was also a past member of the Sturges Young Auditorium Board and instrumental in the purchase of the theater organ of which he played for various programs including the Kiwanis Travelogue. He was a member of the American Theater Organ Society, held a private pilot's license and loved playing chess.
He is survived by his wife: Gladys; two daughters: Natalie (David) Setterblad of Sturgis and Janell (Gary) Dunlap of Sturgis; one son: Neil (Kari) Johnston II of Grand Blanc; seven grandchildren: Erin Alldredge, Samantha Setterblad, Christina (Bo) Moore and Austin Dunlap all of Sturgis, Stuart, Riley and Mara Johnston all of Grand Blanc; seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter: Cheryl and several brothers and sisters.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Neil H. Johnston will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday June 28th at the First Baptist Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Dennis DeMott will officiate.
The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations would be appreciated to the First Baptist Church, 1050 E. Fawn River Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091 or the Kiwanis Club of Sturgis Foundation c/o: Sturgis Area Foundation, 310 N. Franks Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091.
