Mary Ellen Wygant age 95 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Monday afternoon, June 12, 2017 at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
She was born July 22, 1921 in Huntington County, Indiana near Roanoke daughter of the late Edward and Florence (Duhammel) Wygant.
Mary Ellen resided her early life in Roanoke and was a graduate of Roanoke High School with the class of 1939. She furthered her education at the Parkview Memorial Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. Shortly after becoming a Registered Nurse she accepted a position with the Sturgis Memorial Hospital in Sturgis, Michigan where she worked for 18 years in the Surgical Recovery Department. Mary Ellen retired from General Motors in Indianapolis, Indiana following 18 years of dedicated employment as a company plant night nurse. After her retirement she returned to Sturgis.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Sturgis Woman's Club and the Craft Club all in Sturgis and for many years enjoyed volunteering her time with the Sturgis Hospital Magazine Guild.
She is survived by two nieces: Lou Ann Weyler of Indianapolis, Indiana and Joy Sheets of Roanoke, Indiana; one nephew: Burton Wygant of Roanoke and several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Nona Schoeff and one brother: Laurel Wygant.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A private graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at the Glenwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331 is entrusted with the arrangements.
