Donald Ray Hansen, Jr. age 70 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Friday afternoon, June 9, 2017 at his home.
He was born May 26, 1947 in South Bend, Indiana son of the late Donald Ray and Zanna (Rhea) Hansen.
On May 31, 2014 he married Carol McGary Matz at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis.
Donald retired from a powder coating company in Edwardsburg. He had also been employed as a firefighter with the South Bend Fire Department in South Bend, Indiana, owned and operated a tree cutting business and worked in waste water treatment.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis where he was always willing to volunteer his time for the church breakfasts and mission activities. He was a member of the Sturgis Hospital Popcorn Guild and enjoyed volunteering his time with the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging. He also enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the Helmer Card Club in Helmer, Indiana.
Donald was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army serving from July 12, 1966 – July 11, 1968 during the Vietnam War earning the rank of Private First Class.
He is survived by his wife: Carol; five daughters: Lora Putnam, Lisa Andrews, Jennifer (Steve) Miller, Caryle (Ray) Bingaman and Sarah (Zach) Jones; two sons: Jonathan Hansen and Wayne Hansen; many grandchildren; step-mother: Gloria Hansen; five brothers: Gene (Tammy) Tener, Ron (Deb) Tener, Terry (Connie) Hansen, Mike Hansen, Don Hansen and David (Chris) Hansen and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Wayne Hansen, Ron Hansen and Jim Hansen.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis where a memorial service celebrating the life of Donald R. Hansen, Jr. will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday. The Rev. Jeanne Koughn will officiate. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
